Dr. Amy Salmon with Alisdair, our aging vlogger.

This new role will embed research at the forefront of health, education, and community. It will facilitate the creation of meaningful evidence on how best to support seniors across the Province.

It is no surprise to anyone that we are faced with extraordinary pressures on our health system. It can be challenging to imagine, let alone ensure we have adequate support to help older adults thrive. But we must.

Join our fundraising campaign – because our seniors deserve our best.

At times like these, we urgently need some sensemaking – okay, a lot of sensemaking. We need to sift through what’s working, a roadmap on where to go, and a compass to know if we are on the right path. To shift how we care for seniors, we must ensure our system can generate quality insights that knowledge users can put into practice. To build that capacity, we need first to resource it properly. Think in terms of having the right people, roles, and funding to do what’s necessary, not what is easy.

We often refer to Dr. Salmon as our Chief Sensemaker on Seniors Care. She leads a Seniors Research Group uniquely positioned at the Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes, a partnership institute between UBC Public Health and Province Health Care. This multidisciplinary team of scientists is dedicated to bringing forward meaningful evidence that can shift how we care for older people.

Of course, creating a new role like this would not be possible without the participation of our many partners, including the Centre for Advancing Health, University of British Columbia, Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation, Island Health Research, Eldercare Foundation, Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation, Providence Living, and Providence Research. We are truly grateful for their recognition of the Distinguished Scholar in Seniors Care as a critical piece to improving care for seniors. We hope you join them by donating today – because our seniors deserve our best.

For our part, the Conconi Family Foundation has committed $1.5M in funding for the Distinguished Scholar in Seniors Care. The funds will be used to develop a robust Seniors Research Program over the next decade. You too, can make a difference. Oh, and who knows…maybe you are the lucky one who gets to benefit from improved ways of aging in the community or long-term care should you need those public services. Donate today
