BC Brain Wellness Program

WHO

Based at UBC’s Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health, the BC Brain Wellness Program (BCBWP) delivers evidence-informed, donor-funded wellness programs for people living with chronic brain conditions, their care partners and healthy agers.

WHAT

This grant supports the expansion of the BCBWP to Providence Health Care’s Youville long-term care residence, offering exercise and gardening programs that help residents and care partners stay active, connected, and engaged.

WHY

Movement and exercise are key to aging well. BWBWP builds on this evidence with personalized, lifestyle-based programs that improve quality of life. In long-term care, this means rethinking what wellness can look like. BCBWP goes beyond traditional senior fitness programs, supporting residents to build strength, mobility and independence through regular exercise and hands-on gardening, with a focus on increasing functionality and maintaining independence.

WILD CARD

Programs are tailored to each person’s goals, abilities and health status, with care partners encouraged to participate. Early results have shown older adults who participate in BWBWP have improved mobility, greater independence, and, in some cases, discharge from long-term care.
